About University of California San Diego

The University of California at San Diego is one of ten in the University of California public university educational system. Located in sunny La Jolla, California, UCSD is home to nearly 30,000 students and has been consistently ranked in the top 40 national universities by US News and World Report.

A well-funded research university, the sprawling UCSD campus is home to six sub-colleges, each with a different educational focus. In addition, each campus has its own particular architecture and dining opportunities. For example, John Muir College on the western edge of campus is noted for its two high rise dormitories, from which students and visitors can look west over the Pacific. To the east, Earl Warren College is set on the edge of a canyon and ecological preserve, with clear south-of-the-border influences apparent in the architecture.

The University is home to a Veterans Administration hospital, and also hosts several large sports fields and related facilities which house its NCAA II level sports teams. An attraction for military minded types can be found a few miles to the east in Miramar, long home to the famed "Top Gun" pilot school and airbase. The Geisel library noted for its Dr. Seuss exhibit and named after the writer of the Dr. Seuss series.

Close to campus dining and shopping opportunities abound. Head south of campus down Gilman Street and you'll find La Jolla Village Square, a shopping center with a movie theater, grocery store, banks, and numerous restaurants. Perhaps UCSD's most gorgeous attraction is the cliffs overlooking Black's Beach to the west of campus. A short walk west leads to spectacular views over the Pacific. A UCSD tradition is often observed where Thursday night’s students head out to the cliffs to relax and take a deserved break from their studies.
