Dining near University of California San Diego

Dining near the University of California at San Diego, CA can be an immensely pleasurable experience. The campus itself is in La Jolla, an upscale community just a few minutes by car or light rail north of San Diego proper. The options are varied and set to appeal to a variety of palates - exactly what you would expect when traveling to one of the sunniest cities in California.

First off, the campus itself has an incredible variety of cuisine available to visitors. Unlike most college campuses, UCSD is split into six distinct sub-colleges, and each has its own dining hall open to students with its own specialty foods. Sandwiches made from fresh sliced meats are available at John Muir, and excellent burgers are served at Thurgood Marshall.

Close to campus is the La Jolla Village shopping center centered around Gilman street and Ville La Jolla Drive. A Chipotle offers tasty Mexican cuisine, and a friendly TGI Fridays restaurant is nearby as well. Islands restaurant has a strong surfing and beach theme, and serves humongous burgers with excellent baskets of fries. Nearby there is a California Pizza Kitchen serving unique pizza and related Italian meals, and is a fantastic destination for large groups.

Asian meals are, as one would expect, plentiful in the area. Perhaps one of the most easily overlooked eateries is Flamebroiler - a small Korean BBQ restaurant located in a food court across from a Rubios. A wide variety of authentic Korean dishes are available, and outdoor seating is conveniently located. Try one of the BBQ bowls with rice, meat, and vegetables, and as much spice as you can handle.

Also worthy of note, though not immediately adjacent to the University Campus, is the location of that California standby, In N Out. For those of you with a craving for animal style double-doubles, head south from La Jolla on Interstate 5, and look for the In N Out sign as you approach Pacific Beach north of San Diego. In N Out is also conveniently located to a strip of clubs and restaurants close to the beach itself, and is also worth a look for anyone in the UCSD area interested in nighttime dining.
